Sjogren's Style: Spectacular Spectacles

This post from Sjogren's Style may have just solved my most recent lazybutt problem.

After my final eye exam following my cataract surgeries, my surgeon gave me a paper copy of a prescription for new glasses. Technically I don't need  prescription glasses for driving but my vision is not completely 20/20, and I definitely need to use reading glasses. So I stuffed the prescription into my wallet and there it has stayed for what seems like forever.

The thing is, I just hate choosing new glasses. Granted, this go-around will involve lenses that are considerably thinner than my previous coke-bottle-bottom ones, and I will not be wearing them continuously, so actually the task should be easier than ever before. I need to just go buy the stupid things. But I just don't want to do it.

In the meantime, I have been buying cheapo reading glasses and leaving them scattered around the house and car and everywhere I go.

Well. Who knew that you could order glasses online? Sjogren's Style's excellent post provides links and reviews of her purchases of several pair of glasses.

Cool. Online shopping. I adore online shopping.

Here's a snippet of her post but head over to her blog to read the entire article:
.....And here's what I've learned:
  • Pay close attention to the measurements. After all of my Warby Parker try-ons, I realized that a lot of glasses that look nice on the models are HUGE on me. The other web sites offer more detailed information (like lens height), so I was able to make a decent guess about what they'd look like.
  • The option to upload a picture of yourself is fun, but was kind of useless on most of the sites. They just don't size the glasses very well, so none of them looked like they did in the pictures in real life.
  • As you'd expect, the "free" options on these sites aren't always free. There are a lot of add-ons that are pretty important (esp. anti-glare/anti-reflective coating), but it's all still reasonably inexpensive.

Be careful of internet order glasses, lens quality is not as good, there is no fitting of the glasses and centration is often not correct so they defeat the purpose of having custom made glasses, which is to provide optimal vision and reduce eye strain.

I can strongly recommend Clearly Contacts in Canada (and despite the name, they do prescription glasses). You can speak to an optometrist if you need help reading your prescription, they tell you how to easily measure your pupillary distance (distance pupils are separated) if it is not on your prescription, they tell you how to read/measure important measurements like bridge width, lens height/width, etc from existing glasses that you like, and using these measurements, such as entering your pupillary distance on the photograph, the ones you order are pretty much like the ones you try online. I was very happy with my progressive lens and intend to order readers from them when I have the money.

Better yet, they will take the glasses back if you are unhappy for any reason, including you don't like how they look on you. My better half sent progressives back because she didn't feel she could get used to them and they exchanged at no cost for bifocals. They even send the shipping box.

They don't pay me for any endorsement. I'm just a happy customer who is so tired of getting ripped off by the frame shops.

Hi Julia! It seems like you’re really satisfied with the service. I’m impressed as well on how attentive they are with the details. It can be such a hassle if you have to make another adjustment for the lens. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Going to shops and trying out glasses can be quite tiring, and some might find it boring at times. That’s why it’s nice to know that you found an online shop for glasses. It definitely is a lot easier to buy online, and you it is not that expensive too. Anyway, thanks for sharing this, Julia. All the best!
